Arne Burssens, MD, PhD

About Me

Arne was raised in Ghent, Belgium, and studied Medicine at Ghent University, where he developed a passion for scientific approaches to patient care. He pursued a biomedical engineering program at Trinity University College, Dublin, confirming his interest in biomechanical orthopaedic research. His master's thesis on molecular components associated with shear forces in achilles tendinopathy earned the Best Medical Scription Award (2015-2016).

During his Erasmus program, he studied cartilage lesions under the mentorship of Prof. Jagodzinski at the orthopaedic research lab of Hannover, Germany. After graduating in 2016, he trained as an orthopaedic resident, with focus on foot and ankle surgery. He later obtained a research grant to combine clinical work with a PhD in biomechanics at Ghent University. His research focuses on hindfoot pathologies and weightbearing CT.

Now a Research Fellow at the University of Utah, he works under Professors Barg, Saltzman, and Anderson. Outside of research, he enjoys Utah’s outdoors through running, hiking, and biking.
