Welcome to University of Utah Orthopaedic Research
For over sixty years the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Utah has a nationally recognized tradition of excellence in patient care and teaching. Research programs have grown substantially in the past decade.
The Department has a well-organized research staff supporting coordination and supervision of research activities. These activities include all aspects of protocol development and implementation, to data maintenance and regulatory management, to grant management services, and financial oversight. The current research portfolio includes more than $5 million in annual external support, principally from the National Institutes of Health, the Department of Defense, Department of Veteran’s Affairs, as well as private foundations and industry-sponsored research.
Today laboratories work collaboratively to compliment a robust clinical research program within the Department in:
- bioengineering
- biomechanics
- and musculoskeletal biology
Thirty-eight full-time clinical faculty cover the breadth of orthopaedic subspecialties for clinical service, resident and fellow education, and related clinically-focused research as well as

- 1 MD-PhD
- 1 MD faculty
- 6 PhD students
- 5 postdoctoral fellows
- 9 full-time clinical research coordinators

Other Tasks

- Create an account with the Institutional Review Board (IRB) online portal, ERICA
- Know the following information about your research team:
- Principle Investigator Name
- Research Coordinator Name
- Project information including project type (retrospective or prospective)
- IRB # and/or the Umbrella specialty
- What accesses you will need to complete your work (EPIC, Powerchart, PACS, Research Drive, Research UBox)
Final Step
Complete your application via REDCap
- Have all of the above PDFs, documents and information ready as you will need to upload them into the REDCap form.
- Once you have successfully completed your application, our research team will be notified and you will then shortly receive an email from your coordinator requesting that you complete the Candidate Attestation form.
- Once this is complete, your coordinator will work with our managers to finish the onboarding process and will notify you when you have been given the go ahead to start working!
