Research & Scholarly Activity
Fellows participate in a research project
Participation in scholarly activity is a requirement. There are multiple ways to satisfy this requirement. Fellows participate in a research project, submit at least one paper for publication during the year, and are expected to attend and present at a national sports medicine meeting such as AMSSM or ACSM.
The research or scholarly activity can be part of an ongoing project or it can be an original project. The University of Utah has extensive research resources in sports medicine and sports science.
Fellows have access to experts in all areas of:
- sports medicine
- statisticians
- research coordinators
- IRB experts
- research administrators
Productivity in Sports Medicine Research
Fellows and faculty consistently translate clinical curiosity into impactful scholarship, resulting in a robust number of peer‑reviewed publications and regional, national, and international presentations each year. This sustained productivity highlights our program’s emphasis on academic rigor, research mentorship, and dissemination of evidence that advances the practice of sports medicine.
Scholarly Impact at the National Level
Our Sports Medicine Fellowship demonstrates a sustained and accelerating commitment to academic scholarship through consistent submission of abstracts to the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM). Over the past decade, abstract output has grown steadily, with a notable rise in recent years, reflecting strong mentorship, fellow engagement, and meaningful contributions to the national sports medicine community.
Together, these trends underscore our fellowship’s culture of inquiry, mentorship, and academic excellence, preparing fellows to become leaders in both clinical practice and scholarly contribution.
